International Writing Program

The International Writing Program at the University of Iowa (IWP) provides a unique intercultural experience for established writers who have achieved literary distinction in their own country and for rising stars who have demonstrated literary talent, broad appeal and interest in contributing to the creative writing culture in their home countries. The focus of the program is to examine current trends in literature (including fiction, drama, poetry and screen writing) in the U.S. and worldwide and to explore the creative process involved in writing.  Participants will have a chance to develop their writing skills, share knowledge and techniques, and work with translators to help their countries’ literary works reach a wider audience.

Program criteria:

  • Applicant must be Bahraini
  • Poets, writers, fiction writers, dramatists, screenwriters and literary translators are eligible for the program
  • Proficiency in English
  • Interested in close interaction with other writers from a multiplicity of diverse countries and cultures
  • Applicant should have at least one published volume of work or works that appeared in significant publications over a period of at least two years

We are no longer accepting applications for this year.  The U.S. Embassy announces a call for applications annually, generally in March.
